Welcome to Forty Mile C.A.L.A.!

Jodi Cassell
Executive Director

The Forty Mile Community Adult Learning Association was first founded in 1972 under the name of Forty Mile Further Education.  The responsibility for providing extension courses fell under the Ministry of Education and the Foremost Community School was Forty Mile Further Education’s legal host.   A board of directors was formed to oversee the programs and activities of Forty Mile Further Education.  In 1973 financing for non-credit school extension courses was transferred to the Ministry of Advanced Education.

Although Advanced Education maintains an overall role of coordination, the Local Further Education Councils coordinate the programming at the local inter-agency level.  As each council functions within the boundary of a city, county or school division, each council operates according to the needs of that area.In addition to the Policy, Guidelines and Procedures set out by Advanced Education, each Council develops its own constitution and by-laws which govern its operation.  The local Hosting Authority, institution, county or school board acts in an administrative capacity in the handling of grants and distribution of funds.

The Further Education Council added the Write Break Literacy Project to its programming in 1984.  In the year 2000, the Further Education Council broke away from its legal host and became a registered non profit society.  They also changed their name to the Forty Mile Community Adult Learning Association.  The Forty Mile Volunteer Resource Centre was added into programming in 2002.
